Not sure that the thrust of epublishing is all about the writer. Publishers are still a hugely important part of the mix, both as a filter, and sometimes (though more rarely now, admitedly) as a financier. And it's definitely publishers who are best positioned to force change in the distribution market. Without them, all readers, and authors eventually, would likely fall victim to various demands of Amazon.

'Finally, Publishers need to use the power of their size to force de-linking of books from a specific E-reader and Pricing of E-Books.'

The idea of publishers using their power thus, is anathema to the whole thrust of epublishing where the writer is king and retains control of his/her work.

The epub format has already delinked the open format ebook from the bondage of being tied to a specific ereader!

nice piece that informs people. I would add that, as far as I know, the best version of the IPad is not available: iPad™ with Wi-Fi + 3G - 64GB. This may have to do with pricing- This IPad is expensive.
As with all the E-Readers there are several issues that have to be dealt with before we see a "maturing" of this market. One is the proprietary nature of each E-Reader. Another is formatting. Another is that you do not want to be anywhere near water or any liquid. But, having said that, E-Readers represent the future and what we see now is not that future.
Finally, Publishers need to use the power of their size to force de-linking of books from a specific E-reader and Pricing of E-Books.
