Irish Short Story eJournal, The South Circular, To Focus On Smart Phone & Tablet Users
The ejournal will be published online and in epub format for Android and iOS devices for just €3.00 and features four stories by emerging authors Eddie Stack, Eley Williams, Shane Hulgraine and Adrian Duncan. The cover jacket features the work of young Irish illustrator and designer, Fuchsia Macaree.
Writing on the eJournal’s blog, publisher Aoife Walsh said, ‘we felt that even after nine months of planning, time was now against us and we were torn between bringing issue 1 out when we had promised everyone we would and postponing it until we had conquered the obstacle course that is iTunes authorization.’
A conscious decision was made not to publish to Amazon Kindle’s just yet. Walsh said that, ‘at the moment, we’re focusing on the smartphone and tablet users. We actually consider them to be quite a different ‘consumer’ to those who read on ereaders like Kindles. We’re hoping to appeal to those who consume other media easily and instinctively, on the move, and consequently perhaps, alter the readership for short stories.’

Walsh also said ‘we believe passionately in the short story as a unique and inspiring genre.’ She expressed confidence that the project could find a space in the market, adding, ‘more romantically, we really hope to be able to enhance a person’s digital consumption with beautiful and thought-provoking short stories. To this end, The South Circular has been working non-stop with graphic designer Hannah Doyle (www.doyleydesigns) to deliver a handsome digital journal for iPhones, iPads and Androids.’
The launch of The South Circular was reported earlier this year on Irish Publishing News.
