Irish Top Ten, Week Ending 10/03/2012 | Another Good Week For Cathy Kelly

With the World Book Day titles still pulling in sales and skewing the top ten, there are nonetheless some interesting examples of strong sales for more regular titles.

Cathy Kelly’s The House On Willow Street, which has again been supported by radio ads over the last week, saw a cool 1,637 units through the tills and the three titles of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games Trilogy sold well clearing close to 3,600 units between them, driven, no doubt, by the upcoming movie release of the first film in the trilogy.

Not to be ignored is Maureen Gaffney’s Flourishing which remains in the top twenty and last week saw just shy of 1,000 copies sold.

Charts: Top Ten Irish Ebooks March 9th 2012

These top ten lists carry huge caveats. First that they represent a shifting top ten recorded by IPN at a given time and do not reflect ebook sales over a longer period. Second that they do not indicate volume or value of sales. Thirdly and finally that although the do indicate the top ten at the time of recording, they are subject to change due to sales at any given time.

World Book Day Titles Drive Top Ten

Huge numbers of World Book Day titles sold through retailers last week driving enormous volume if not a lot of revenue through the doors. Irish publisher, The O’Brien Press squeaked into the top ten with their now annual World Book Day dual language flip book beating out Ruth Field’s Run Fat Bitch Run by 50 units!

Only Lorna Byrne managed to break through the sea of slim volumes to break into the top ten with an impressive 1,613 copies selling through. The rest of the top twenty titles featured a fair amount of YA titles too with three of Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy books featuring.

Maureen Gaffney continued a strong sale on the back of ongoing radio and other media appearances and Cathy Kelly’s The House On Willow Street, supported this week by radio advertising performed well too.

Irish Book Market Continues To Crash

Nielsen Bookscan figures for the first eight weeks of the year show continued declines in Irish book sales.

Gill & Macmillan Start Releasing Ebooks

One of Ireland top trade publishers has started releasing ebooks. Gill & Macmillan has begun releasing its immediate front list and popular backlist titles on Amazon’s Kindle platform.

Beginning with a  batch of eight released in December 2011, the publisher has now released 19 titles in total including Dying To Survive the memoir of former heroin addict Rachel Keogh, Paul Bew’s new biography of Charles Stewart Parnell, Enigma and Pádraig Yeates, A City in Wartime.

Gill & Macmillan has priced all titles at $9.99 or less so far.

The move comes as Mercier Press confirms by tweet and further commentary that the publisher’s ebooks success over the Christmas period continued in January sales.

‘We are seeing significant increases in sales for ebooks that have been available for over 6 months now, and achieving growth through our efforts at adding to the number of titles available. We are not yet at the percentage of turnover that some publishing companies are reporting, but it is a real growth segment in a market where traditional sales are struggling,’ said Patrick Crowley Sales & Marketing Manager at Mercier.

Penguin Ireland Signs Debut Author

Penguin Ireland has announced the acquisition of Love is the Easy Bit by a debut author, Mary Grehan. Grehan is the Arts Director for Waterford Healing Arts Trust.

The novel was acquired from Ger Nichol at The Book Bureau and will be published in Spring 2013.

Patricia Deevy, Editorial Director, Penguin Ireland who acquired the title said, ‘Love is the Easy Bit pulls off the amazing feat of being in equal measure heart-breaking and joyful. It is a rich, thought-provoking and satisfying story and it is a huge pleasure and privilege to have such a distinctive and remarkable new voice as Mary’s joining our list.’

The novel is the story of 37-year-old Sylvia Larkin’s struggle with, and ultimate survival of, her family history. According to the company, the story is told in Sylvia’s irreverent, quirky and, at times, angry voice and is a book of huge emotional power which examines relationships, family, love and death through a compelling story.

Grehan said, ‘I am thrilled that Penguin will publish my debut novel Love is the Easy Bit. The book covers a broad spectrum of human experience within a simple story. I hope readers will find personal moments of recognition between the covers. I cannot wait to see it in print.’ The author also wrote a piece on The Inkwell Group’s website about how the book was acquired.

Irish Digital Only Fiction Publisher Laucnhes

A new digital publisher has launched in Kildare. Tirgearr Publishing is (by our estimate) Ireland’s first digital-only publisher focused on fiction.

The company, founded by author Kemberlee Shortland, is primarily a publisher of adult genre fiction (from the look of the launch list primarily romance titles).

According to the company its business model, ‘dispenses with literary agents, gives authors a say when it comes to having their books produced, and pays fair market royalties.’

The launch list is already live with three titles and three more to be published by the end of June. Books will be published in all formats.

Despite being based in Ireland, the publisher hopes to work with authors from across the globe and says that its ‘editors work with authors on a one-on-one basis to ensure each book presented is of the highest quality … the publisher works side-by-side with authors to develop effective marketing plans and promotional programs, advising on career choices and forward career planning, and assist in setting up the author’s overall image.’

Tirgearr offers an intriguing insight into its pricing policy on their submissions page with a chart featuring suggested retail prices for given text lengths ranging from $1.99 for 9,000 words or less up to $4.99+ for novel length books in excess of 95,000 words.

Social media marketing is  a large part of the company’s marketing plan and it already sports a Facebook page, a Twitter account, a Blogger site, a Tumblr blog,  a YouTube Channel, and LinkedIn and StumbleUpon profiles.

Tirgearr’s Launch Titles:

Tutti-Frutti Blues, Dude Looks Like A Lady, and the 2-in-1 volume The Carmel Charmers Series, by award-winning romance author, Kemberlee Shortland

The Trouble With French Kisses, book one in The Trouble Series, by award-winning romance author, Kristi Ahlers

Man City by award-winning erotica author, C. Margery Kempe

Forthcoming titles:

The Secret of Narava, sequel to The Promise of Kierna’Rhoan, by award-winning author, Isabo Kelly

Rhythm of My Heart, book two in the Irish Pride series by Kemberlee Shortland

Beguiler, book two in the ABCs of S-E-X: Love by the Letter series, by award-winning author, Scarlett Valentine

In an interesting shift, an Irish radio interview has led to an ebook edition of a book spiking on Amazon’s bestseller lists.

Constable author, Tim Newark, whose book, The Fighting Irish was the subject of a Pat Kenny interview Wednesday 22nd February. By the end of the day the book had climbed to the top of  the Kindle Irish History bestseller charts and had spiked in the paperback Irish History Bestseller charts.

It remains at #5 on the Kindle chart and #88 on the print bestseller charts a day later. It’s an example of how the immediacy of availability can move units and drive sales for publishers.
