Irish Top Ten Week Ending 05/02/2011

Patrick Holford’s rise to the top of the charts has been driven by a Late Late show appearance. Despite the emergence of book clubs (which are largely responsible for word of mouth titles like The Help) media appearances remain pretty vital drivers of sales.

Still the week is about much more than Holford, it is about fiction pushing through and coming to the fore. The paperback edition of Marian Keyes’ The Brightest Star In The Sky has come in very string and Emma Donoghue’s Room keeps on selling!

1: The Feel Good Factor:10 Proven Ways to Boost Your Mood and Motivate Yourself, Patrick Holford, 2,313

Rights Success For Maverick House

A title sold by Maverick House to Ebury Press in the UK has reached number six in the Sunday Times bestseller list this week, selling some 2,600 units in the week.

Maverick sold Audrey Delaney’s Innocent to Ebury Press in 2010 and the Random House division published the book under the title, All My Fault this January.

Editorial Director of Maverick House, John Mooney said that he is, ‘delighted that Audrey’s book is finally attracting the attention it deserves. The book was a difficult one for Audrey to write as it dealt with her own story – that of a child who was being abused by her own father. It is a particularly harrowing story as she explores the psychological trauma she endured. I think the honesty with which she approached the subject matter is part of the reason behind the book’s success. Our aim is now to use this opportunity to secure more translation deals.’

Mooney also said that the book was translated into German in 2010 and has been reprinted twice. Maverick is also negotiating other rights deals for the book.

Irish Top Ten Week Ending 13/11/2010

There’s no denying it, Hachette Ireland have scored a winner with the John Giles Autobiography, which this week is a convincing number one.

However, their Penguin rivals have claimed a stunning three of the top four titles including, Jamie Oliver, Ross O’Carroll-Kelly and Jeff Kinny.

It is indicative of the power of nostalgia that Soundings remains in the top ten with an impressive number of units sold too. Perhaps more surprising is the return of Stieg Larsson to the elite.

1: John Giles a Football Man, John Giles, 2,060
2: Jamie’s 30-minute Meals, Jamie Oliver, 1,990
3: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth, Jeff Kinney, 1,902
4: The Oh My God Delusion, Ross O’Carroll-Kelly, 1,237
5: Guinness World Records 2011, 1,186
6: Soundings: Poems We Did for Our Leaving Certificate, 1,182
7: Room, Emma Donoghue, 1,045
8: JFK in Ireland: Four Days That Changed a President, Ryan Tubridy, 947

Sarah Rees, of Cover to Cover in Swansea, said History of the World in 100 Objects by Neil MacGregor (Allen Lane) is a strong seller. She said: “It’s the type of book that is great for indies. It is Radio Four, it’s middle ground. It’s perfect for us.” Rees said Oliver had been a big seller, selling more copies on Mondays after the “30-Minute Meals” programmes are repeated on Sundays.

According to Nielsen Bookscan data, Wait For Me by Deborah Devonshire (John Murray) is a bestseller for indies and has spent nine weeks in the Indie Top 20 since 4th September. Christine Bridger, manager of Old Hall Bookshop in Brackley, said: “The Duchess of Devonshire is selling unbelievably. We’re not even making a big song and dance about it.”

Irish Top Ten Ebooks For August 2010

Starting today with the figures for August, and monthly from now on, Irish Publishing News will report the Top Ten Bestselling ebooks through Eason’s ebook store.

Obviously this is only one outlet and the figures for ebook sales are in that way somewhat biased. However until we can secure more sales data from other sources, they’ll remain the best we have.

Interestingly they represent a very different top ten then the weekly print top ten (for the lastest see here). Though this list will cover fiction and non-fiction, no fiction title has made the list.

According to Stephen Boylan, Eason Books Purchasing Manager, the best selling non-fiction title is Matt Cooper’s Who Really Run’s Ireland, but it isn’t selling enough to make the top ten.

Boylan also said, ‘Non-fiction (including academic) is a strong seller, but it tends to be spread across a wider range of titles whereas the new titles in fiction have repeated hits.’

And so, courtesy of Easons, the first Irish Top Ten Ebooks:

1) Pieces of my Heart by Sinead Moriarty
2) The Help by Kathryn Stockett
3) The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown
4) The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas
5) The Radleys by Matt Haig
6) The Passage by Justin Cronin
7) Legend of a Suicide by David Vann
8) The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver
9) Champagne Kisses by Amanda Brunker
10) Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer
