Briefly Noted | Bloomsbury warns over trading slump – FT.com

In response to the announcement, analysts reviewed their full-year forecasts for Bloomsbury.

“The net impact will be to see forecasts ease for February 2012 but advance for February 2013,” added Malcolm Morgan, an analyst at Peel Hunt.

“We anticipate pre-tax profit for the year to February to settle around £9m – a £400,000 advance for the acquisition and a £700,000 reduction for trading.”

The news came as Bloomsbury announced the £20.1m acquisition of Continuum International, a publishing house with offices in London and New York that specialises in academic and professional titles.

In his chief executive’s statement Nigel Newton said e-books were experiencing “extraordinary” growth, particularly in fiction in the US, where e-book sales were already at 15%. He said according to Amazon 40% of sales of recent bestsellers were as e-books, with Bloomsbury “experiencing similar figures”. Man Booker winner Howard Jacobson’s The Finkler Question had digital sales of 42% of the total in the US in its first six months. Group e-book sales have increased more than 18-fold between 2009 and 2010 from $131,000 to $2.3m.

Irish Top Ten Week Ending 23/10/2010

Fascinating week for the Irish Top Ten this week. Pearson, through Penguin Ireland and Michael Joseph had an exceptional week filling the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 7th slots in the top ten and selling some 6,400 units from those titles alone, in one week.

Some big titles are making an appearance over the next few weeks, not least of which is Ryan Tubridy’s first book on the JFK visit to Ireland, it will be interesting to see if these have an impact on the charts and whether the Pearson titles can hold their own.

Also of note is the arrival in the top ten of Booker winning, The Finkler Question by Howard Jacobson which Bloomsbury published. That makes two of the shortlisted titles in the top ten (including the winner) no mean achievement.

1: The Oh My God Delusion, Ross O’Carroll-Kelly, 2,382
2: Room, Emma Donoghue, 1,549
3: Wasters, Shane Ross & Nick Webb, 1,525
4: Jamie’s 30-minute Meals, Jamie Oliver, 1,502
5: The Reversal, Michael Connelly, 1,161
6: Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert, 1,114
7: The Governor, John Lonergan, 995
8: Worth Dying for, Lee Child, 987
9: The Finkler Question, Howard Jacobson, 949
10: Homecoming, Cathy Kelly, 945

Donoghue Misses Out

Emma Donoghue’s Room has missed out on the Booker prize as Howard Jacobson’s ‘The Finkler Question which was published by Bloomsbury was announced as the winner.

Jacobson’s win marks a defeat for the favourite, C by Tom McCarthy who Ladbrookes suspended betting on earlier in the month.

Jacobson lives in London and this victory follows nominations for the booker prize in 2002 for Who’s Sorry Now and 2006 for Kalooki Nights.
