The Bookseller Reports | Belfast university bookshop to close | The Bookseller

A Belfast academic bookshop has decided to shut its doors after 53 years trading, blaming competition from the internet for declining sales over the last five years.

The Bookshop at Queen’s on University Road in Belfast, Northern Ireland, serves students at the Queen’s University Belfast and has set a provisional date of 31st August to close.

Tim Smyth, manager of the bookshop, said the board of the university-owned bookshop took the decision to close before the shop became unprofitable, which he expected would be next year. He said: “We have always been above the line but next year we will fall below the line. I don’t know how we (independent booksellers) can do it anymore. Certainly the academic model has reached a tipping point now, it is unsustainable.

Raven Books Moves Location

Raven books, the  independent, Blackrock-based bookstore, has moved from its premises on 12 Carysfort Avenue to a much larger shop at 34 Main Street, Blackrock.

According to Louisa Cameron, founder and owner of the bookshop, ’When moving into our first premises, I intentionally negotiated a short-term lease knowing that with such a tiny space it was very much a first step. It worked admirably for establishing a presence but it would have remained a struggle and inhibited any serious growth without expanding to a larger building. I had been watching out for a suitable premises when 34 Main Street went on the market and I knew instantly it would be an excellent location both for its position central to the village and in relation to where the VEC will be opening in September.’

The move will see Raven Books selling, ‘a larger percentage of new books, and after discovering a hidden alcove there will be a dedicated children’s area,’ according to Cameron.

It will also enable the independent to host events and already a first event is planned, Crime & Coffee on Thursday 26 May with Arlene Hunt and Ava McCarthy confirmed. Barista Peter McDonagh will be in charge of caffeination.

Asked was she worried about the poor retail environment Cameron said, ‘I have to say no. There is a ferocious amount of scaremongering regarding the book trade and economy generally and if I paid attention to every shock story I have no doubt an anxiety would be created. However, I choose to focus my time and energy on a more positive approach and see the number of customers walking through the door, handing over their hard-earned cash and leaving happy with their purchases. What has given me the greatest hope during the move is the number of children who have stopped by the window and been so excited that “It’s a bookshop!!”‘

Kenny's To Launch Custom Publishing Service

Kennys, the Galway-based bookstore that also operates the successful online bookstore, is launching a web based custom book publishing service called Mybook.ie.

The services allows users to access two databases of genealogical and historical information and compile that content into their own collection.

Users will then format their book using a bookbuilder software and the resulting book will be printed and bound by Kennys.

The War Biography Research Library contains records on servicmen from across the English speaking world while the Genealogy Research Library allows people to access census and other detailed information on their family history.

The launch will take place as part of The Back To Our Past event in the RDS Dublin over the weekend of the 15th-17th October 2010.

Bookshops Near Closed Hughes & Hughes Stores: Dundrum

Hughes & Hughes may now have closed but bookshops of many varieties still trade near their former locations.

Irish Publishing News offers a list of the bookshops nearby that can offer books to keep readers looking for new releases or bargain books happy.

In this edition: Dundrum

Eason
The obvious and simple answer to the question; “where will I buy my books now” is Eason Dundrum, a well stocked store when it comes to bestsellers and popular fiction. It also has a decent Irish and world history section and a considerable science fiction bay. By far not the worst Eason store.

Tesco
While the Tesco in Dundrum has books it is not the best selection around and may disappoint.

Alternatives
As previously pointed out Dun Laoghaire is well stocked with bookshops but Blackrock and Stillorgan also feature decent independents for the book browser.
