Briefly Noted | Thalia Acquires Textunes And Announces OYO II

The decision to acquire the textunes GmbH and the launch of a dedicated e-reading app is based, the company said, also on the rapid expansion of the market for digital reading devices in Germany. “The interest in digital content that can be read on other mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets, has risen sharply in the last twelve months,” says Busch, “In addition to the OYO and our existing content and service offerings, we are expanding the comprehensive know-how and offer textunes and with its own e-reading app now our expertise in the German e-reading market and offer our customers an even wider digital reading experience.”

Google Ebooks Launches In United States

Google has launched its ebook offering in the USA. The service, previously called Google Editions, has been renamed Google Ebooks.

Google Ebooks promotes a vision of cloud based storage of ebooks that allows the user to read a purchased book on any device with an internet connection. The platform allows synching of books across multiple devices.

The site offers downloadable apps for Android and Apple devices as well as B&N’s Nook and Sony’s Reader devices. For now, these apps are not available outside of the US (unless readers have US iTunes or other app store accounts).

It offers readers a range of free public domain and free view titles and a selection of new releases and in copyright works. The company claims to have some ’3 million free ebooks and hundreds of thousands of titles that are ready for purchase.’

The titles on offer are a mix of those scanned as part of Google’s digitization program and title submitted by publishers who are members of Google’s partner program.

For now, only US readers can buy New York Times Bestsellers and other recent paid titles, but those outside of the US have to the free and public domain titles.

Google aims to launch Google ebooks outside of the USA in the first quarter of 2011 though as with Apple’s iBookstore, this may mean that the UK and other territories get access to paid for titles on a rolling schedule while other territories have access to only the free titles.

G&M To Launch EBooks In 2011

Gill & Macmillan, the largest Irish-based publisher, is to launch consumer targeted ebooks in the first quarter of 2011.

According to Tony Hetherington, Digital Developments manager, the company will ‘focus on device linked stores as the way forward.’

Hetherington highlighted Amazon’s Kindle, Apple’s iPad which is linked to their iBooks and iBookstore and also Kobobooks which has an ereader as part of their offering. Currently, iBooks offers only free public domain titles to Irish readers.

Gill & Macmillan has been experimenting with digital books in its educational business for some time having launched an ereader trial as early as 2008.

Hetherington said that the company had previously hoped to launch before Christmas but it still needed to put ‘a couple of things in place.’

The company relaunched its website earlier this year with a new ecommerce engine and has rolled out a number of mini-sites to support its titles.
