Irish Book Awards: Who’s Going To Win

With public voting finishing over the weekend, the nominated authors and publishers in this years Irish Book Awards are no doubt starting to feel a little anxious about their chances.

IPN will report the winners as soon as they are announced on the night and would like to take this chance to wish the best of luck to all nominees.

Irish Book Awards Shortlists Announced

Penguin Ireland was the big winner in yesterday’s announcement of the Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards Shortlists. The company received a total of 10 nominations (and John Murray, its sister imprint another) twice that of any of its rivals.

The variety of Irish author’s nominated was impressive with Sebastian Barry, Neil Jordan, Derek Landy, Benjamin Black and Alan Glynn all nominated as well as  Orla Tinsley, comedian Des Bishop, radio presenter Joe Duffy, award-winning jockey Tony McCoy, scriptwriter/director John Butler and Irish rugby player Donncha O’Callaghan.

Transworld Ireland, Gill & McMillan, HarperCollins and Pan Macmillan all garnered five nominations with the Hachette group of companies pulling in five as well. Random House gained four, Simon & Schuster three.

Smaller publishers also did well with Liberties Press gaining one nomination in the Ireland Am Irish Crime Fiction Book of the Year for Absolute Zero Cool by Declan Burke and Adam’s World of Wonders by Benji Bennett from Adam’s Printing Press joining the Junior section of the Specsavers Irish Children’s Book of the Year.

O’Brien Press, who recently acquired Brandon, gained three nominations, Mercier Press two as did Faber & Faber and Poolbeg with Granta, Atlantic, Andersen Press and Cosair gaining one each.

Public voting for the awards has now started and can be completed online, here. The winners will be announced at an awards dinner in the Concert Hall of the Royal Dublin Society on 17 November.

Ryan Tubridy Straight In At Number Six

Ryan Tubridy has stormed into the Irish Top Ten with his first book, JFK In Ireland: Four Days That Changed A President.

The radio and TV star who was nominated for an Irish Book Award on the day his book was released, saw sales of some 1,116 units in less than a week.

The sales see him at number two in the hardback non-fiction charts beaten only by Jamie Oliver’s 30 Minute Meals.

Irish Book Of The Decade Shortlist Announced

The Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards has announced the shortlist for the Irish Book of the Decade.

The public has been invited to vote for their favourite from what is a broad list containing literary fiction, commercial fiction, memoir and autobiography as well as on-fiction, adult’s and children’s titles.

The title with the most votes by the close of voting on May 28th will be awarded a special Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards Irish Book Of the Decade trophy.

Bord Gáis Energy To Sponsor Irish Book Awards

New Bord Gais Energy Irish Book Awards LogoThe Irish Book Awards has signed a new headline sponsor with Irish semi-state company, Bord Gáis Energy. The company is to sponsor the event for three years starting in 2010.

The Awards will now take place in November and submissions are open until the closing date of 30th September 2010.

As part of the deal Bord Gáis Energy will launch a nationwide reading promotion in April 2010.

Irish Book Awards "Unaffected" By Hughes & Hughes Collapse

Irish Book Awards LogoThe Irish Book Awards will be unaffected by the collapse of Hughes & Hughes according to IBA administrator, Bert Wright. The bookshop chain, which entered receivership on Friday 26th February, had been one of the event’s sponsors.

A new headline sponsor for the Awards will be announced later this year.

Irish Book Of The Decade Award Announced

The Irish Book Awards have announced a new Book Of The Decade Award and the moving of the full awards to November.

The Book Of The Decade Award is open now for nomination now and will run as follows

    Publishers must submit eligible titles by 31st January 2010
    A 50-title longlist will then be selected by a panel of experts from the Irish Literary Academy
    From April 12th to May 21st the longlist will be promoted in bookstores and libraries
    The winning title will be chosen by a public poll conducted via the Irish Book Awards website.
    The winning title will be announced on 1st June

Submissions for the award can be for fiction (including Young Adult children’s books) or narrative non-fiction (excluding manuals, picture books, myths & legends and anthologies). Books must have been been published between 1st January 2000 and 31st December 2009. The Author must be Irish. Each publisher can submit up to 12 titles for consideration.
